Zachary Finnegan is a Chicago-based trumpeter, composer, and bandleader rapidly establishing himself as one of the most compelling new voices in jazz. Since joining Michael Bublé’s band in 2022, Finnegan has performed on five continents & on some of the world’s most iconic stages, including Madison Square Garden, the Staples Center, London’s O2 Arena, the Metropolitan Opera House, São Paulo’s Allianz Parque, and Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena. Praised for his “golden tone and excellent technical command” (All About Jazz), his artistry has been featured on fourteen recordings, culminating in his debut solo release Guidance & Gratitude (Shifting Paradigm Records, 2024), which received international acclaim. As Jason Crafton of the International Trumpet Guild observed, “His compositions have a depth and maturity that hold the listener’s attention, and his improvisations are mature and engaging.”
Finnegan’s versatility as a trumpeter has led him to work across a wide spectrum of ensembles. His trumpet has been heard with the boundary-pushing electro-funk duo KNOWER, the hard-grooving Clint Breeze & The Groove, the Buddy Rich Big Band, the Alan Gresik Swing Orchestra, and the Camila Mennitte Quintet. As a bandleader, his groups have taken the stage at premier jazz venues across the United States, including The Green Mill and Andy’s Jazz Club (Chicago), The Jazz Kitchen (Indianapolis), Café Coda (Madison), and Mr. Tipple’s (San Francisco) with upcoming 2025 debuts in Minneapolis & New York City.
Festival appearances have further showcased his range. Finnegan’s ensembles have headlined the Bull Falls Jazz Festival and the Taste of Bloomington, while his Riverfront Jazz Festival appearances have bookended his career thus far, opening for jazz legend Dave Liebman in 2017 and returning as a featured artist in 2024. He has also appeared as a sideman at the Indy Jazz Fest, Eau Claire Jazz Festival, and many others.
A collaborator at heart, Finnegan has worked with a remarkable range of artists, from rapper Emmitt James and Mexican singer-songwriter Rosalba Valdez to Broadway stars Sean Allan Krill & Jared Bradshaw, crooners Hayden Grove and Sal Valentinetti, and genre-bending groups like Clint Breeze & The Groove. His wide-ranging musical fluency and ability to move effortlessly between jazz, pop, funk, hip-hop, and orchestral music continue to attract diverse collaborators and audiences around the globe.
Finnegan’s formative years set the stage for his professional career. In high school, he earned rare distinction by securing placements in the Wisconsin State Honors Band, Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble each year of eligibility, performing annually at the WMEA conference with the encouragement of his father. He went on to attend the Brevard Jazz Institute, first as a student, then twice as a resident assistant, where he developed the discipline and work ethic essential to his artistic growth. At 17, he toured seven European countries with the Wisconsin Ambassadors of Music and later returned in 2018 as section leader and faculty member, becoming the youngest faculty member and featured soloist in the organization’s history. These experiences gave him an early taste of international touring while instilling lasting values of mentorship, leadership, and artistic responsibility.
Equally dedicated to education, Finnegan maintains a vibrant private studio and serves on faculty with PCCCArts in Chicago, while also leading guest artist residencies at schools and festivals across the country. His teaching spans every level of development, from middle school beginners to advanced collegiate programs, reflecting his passion for nurturing the next generation of musicians. In addition to classroom and clinic work, he has received commissions for original compositions from high school and collegiate jazz ensembles, with four works premiered to date. This ongoing balance of performance, teaching, and composition underscores his belief that artistry and education are inseparably linked.
With a sound rooted in tradition yet unafraid to explore new terrain, Zachary Finnegan is carving a path as a trumpeter and composer whose voice resonates far beyond the jazz world.
